Fulfilling the Vision: European Union Futures? A Joint EU Centres' Conference

Registrations are open for this international conference jointly convened by the European Union Centres in Australia and New Zealand.

This conference will include plenary panels and presented papers led by Professors Heribert Dieter, Nico Groenendijk, Sang Chul Park, Alessandro Rainoldi and Lay Hwee Yeo. Other international speakers have also committed to attending. Tuesday 17 October will feature special sessions with Ambassadors and business and policy representatives. Students, academics, the business community and policy makers are all welcome. If you have any interest in the future of the European Union, you don’t want to miss this event.

The conference leads to an associated event in Adelaide: 'The Future of the EU Summit', hosted by the Hawke EU Centre for Mobilities, Migration and Cultural Transformations, featuring Loukas Tsoukalis. Further details on the Summit can be found here

Conference theme

Many observers are professing increasing scepticism about the future of the European Union (EU). The lingering economic malaise, the potential exit of the United Kingdom, and the apparent divisions between western and eastern European Member States appear to undermine the capacity of the EU to offer credible options for addressing the challenges which European citizens experience. Yet the vision which inspired the formation of the EU is too powerful to dismiss lightly. Despite the current difficulties, many Europeans continue to believe that their future lies in an increasingly integrated Europe. Can this be achieved, despite the challenges? Can European and Member State leaders continue to work together to deliver the expectations that citizens hold?
